How to Replace a Windshield Washer Pump

Windshield Washer Pump Basic:
A windshield washer pump is an affordable part that is simple and effortless to replace and a must have during winter time to work with the wiper blades to thoroughly clean the windshield of the car.
A washer pump in a car's windshield wiping system moves washer fluid from a reservoir via hoses. The motor-driven pump pressurizes the fluid to allow it to be sprayed from the hoses through nozzles onto the front and/or rear windshield of a car. The washer fluid helps windshield wipers get rid of rain, dirt, or other objects that can get in the way with a driver's field of vision. If washer fluid is not being sent out when triggered, the solution will simply be filling the washer system's tank with more fluid or cleaning the nozzles and hoses. In more severe cases, the washer pump may need to be changed.

The pump is placed on the windshield washer fluid reservoir.


Confirming Problem With Windshield Washer Pump:

However, prior to replacing the pump, make sure it is the problem.

You can also listen for a humming sound and feel for a vibration from the pump to see if it is powered.

• Listen closely if you hear the pump run when you turn it on. 

In many cases the hoses can get plugged, or in the winter, the washer fluid can freeze in the hose. If you hear the pump run, detach the hose at the pump and blow compressed air through the hose to dislodge any clog. Use a pin to clean the nozzles. Also, check the hoses for tears and kinks.

• Use a test light to see if the pump is receiving power. 

If you don’t hear the pump actuate, use a test light to confirm there is power to it and a different problem doesn’t exist such as a bad fuse.If all checked ok,then its faulty pump and need to be replaced.

How To Replace Washer Pump:

Park your car on level ground with the engine off and the emergency brake on. Always raise a car based to the manufacturers recommended instructions if needed and safeguard with jack stands. Also we will be dealing with washer fluid so be sure to wear protective clothing, eyewear and gloves.

Required Tools to Complete this Job:  

1. Screwdriver Set
2. Wrenches or socket set
3. Replacement Washer Pump
4. Washer Fluid
5. Shop Towel

Instructions To Replace Windshield Washer Pump

• Track down the windshield washer reservoir.

• Using a wrench or socket, unbolt the washer bottle reservoir.

• There will be a rubber supply hose hooked up at the bottom of the reservoir to the windshield washer pump. With your fingers, slide the hose off the pump. 

NOTE: If you have windshield washer fluid in the reservoir, it will run out, so be prepared to catch it.

• Also linked to the pump is the power supply (small wiring harness). It attaches with a plug. Remove the plug and wiring from the pump.

• Take out the reservoir from the vehicle.

Once the reservoir is removed, turn it to expose the pump. Normally, the pump is held in the reservoir by a rubber grommet and is held firm by the design if the plastic reservoir. Check out to ensure there are no mounting screws. If that is the case, simply pry the pump away from the reservoir and out of the rubber grommet.

• Once the pump is off, use a screwdriver to pry the old rubber grommet from the plastic tank.

• The new pump should come with a new grommet. Install it into the reservoir.

Once the new grommet is installed, lubricate the grommet with a thin coating of oil so the new pump will slip into place easier. It will still require some pressure to be applied so don’t be afraid to push it into place. Make sure it is fully installed.

• Reinstall the supply hose, the wiring harness, and reverse the sequence to replace.

Help Tips And Hints: 

When replacing the washer fluid pump, be sure to clean the reservoir thoroughly to ensure proper pump operation.

But Proper Part for perfect fitting.

When removing the wheel well dirt shield, pry out the plastic plug at the bottom and closest to the center of the car.

On  modern plug, the smaller section of the top will side out when you pry on it. This will release the plug.

The small plastic rivets on the fender lip have a center post which is pressed in when installed which cause the rivet to expand behind the sheet metal. 

You may be able to bend the shield out once all the screws are removed and press the "post" out of the rivets from behind allowing reuse. 

A pry tool like a carpet tack remover is very helpful in removing the rivets and the plug.

You need to lift the tab on the electrical connectors to release. They release easily once the tab is gently lifted.

All pumps and sensors are attached to the reservoir through rubber grommets. They all pull straight out with a little wiggling.

Windshield washer stopped working entirely. No sound from the pump and obviously no spray.
All fuses and wiring checked OK. So replacing the pump is only option.Its very easy to replace Washer Pump. The pump is press fit into the side of the windshield washer reservoir.The reservoir tank is mounted on the cabin side of the passenger side wheel well.

To gain access, you need to bend back the dirt shield in the wheel well. Then  remove the screws, plugs and rivets to allow the passenger side front wheel well shield to be bent back giving access to the washer fluid reservoir and pumps. The picture below shows the reservoir and pumps.
