Hooked Car battery up the wrong way

Hooked battery wrong way If you hooked the battery up backwards then you likely smoked the fuse links at the starter solinoid on the inner fender passenger side. but it likely id the alternator was smoking then you likely smoked it as well. Start by checking all the fuse links at the starter solenoid, and im sure you burnt one or 2 . Replace them and the alternator. Check fuses..... Fusible links....... once you get the power back, watch your alternator, theres a chance hooking power leads up backwards can kill the Alternator. Reversing the battery connections is not too uncommon. If the key is off the damage is often just fusible links and fuses and the alternator. If, however, the key is on a great deal of damage can be done. Many relays, the computer, the ignition switch, etc. If the starter was engaged, it too might have been damaged. And there is the possibility that wires, anywhere in the harnesses, have damaged insulation but won't short out until some future tim...

General Information For Car Battery,Starter,,Starter Solenoid

CAR BATTERY STARTER STARTERSOLENOID  The battery and starting motor are linked by very heavy electrical cables designed to minimize resistance to the flow of current. Generally, the major power supply cable that leaves the battery goes directly to the starter, while other electrical system needs are supplied by a smaller cable. During starter operation, power flows from the battery to the starter and is grounded through the vehicle's frame/body or engine and the battery's negative ground strap. The starter is a specially designed, direct current electric motor capable of producing a great amount of power for its size. One thing that allows the motor to produce a great deal of power is its tremendous rotating speed. It drives the engine through a tiny pinion gear (attached to the starter's armature), which drives the very large flywheel ring gear at a greatly reduced speed. Another factor allowing it to produce so much power is that only intermittent operation is requ...

How to Replace a Battery

Battery Replacement Safety Tip: Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes. 1 Open the hood and locate your battery. 2 Check the battery voltage with a digital multimeter. If the battery voltage is less than 12 volts, charge the battery and perform a load test. Performing a load test will confirm if the battery is good or bad. 3 First, remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Wrap the cable end in a towel and set it away from the battery. 4 Next, remove the positive battery cable from the battery. 5 Remove the battery hold-down or clamp. 6 Note which direction the battery terminals are facing. Remove the battery from the battery tray. 7 Clean the battery tray and hold-down with water. 8 Place the new battery into the battery tray with the terminals on the proper side. Re-install the hold-down or clamp. ...

How To Test Car Battery

Battery Test Testing Car Battery Helpful Information A common problem with a car battery is low voltage. As a battery ages it loses the ability to store electricity resulting in an insufficient flow of electrical energy to the starter. Most starters are designed to operate on a high amperage 12 volt system. When a starter is subjected to low voltage or amperage (flow) it will cause the starter to engage and disengage rapidly producing the machine gun like sound. To fix this problem a battery inspection or replacement is needed. There are two main causes a battery will not perform as it should, either the alternator has failed allowing the battery's state of charge to become weak, or the battery has failed internally and replacement is required. To  check the alternator  the engine must be running, the battery must be charged or  jump started  to check the charging system. If the alternator output test is okay, the  battery  is bad and must be repl...

Battery Replacement Remove And Replace Car Battery Helpful Information Before attempting to replace an automotive battery, make sure the area around the battery is safe to work. Batteries are filled with acid and they can emit both powdered and liquid acid on and around the battery. By sprinkling baking soda over the battery and then rinsing with water will reduce the chance of getting chemical burns. Gloves are highly recommended along with protective eyewear and clothing. Knowing the workings of a  battery  or battery cables  can be helpful. Best Practices When  testing an automotive battery , make sure area is neutralized of all battery acid. Never touch a conductive object between the terminals of any battery. Match or exceed cold cranking amps when replacing a battery. Recycle old battery at any an approved recycling center. Step by step repair guide on how to replace an automotive battery. This article pertains to all non hybrid or el...
