The pistons are designed to fire consecutively to rotate the crankshaft inside the engine block. Motor oil is used to cool and lubricate internal engine parts including the crankshaft, camshaft, cylinders, pistons, piston rings, wrist pin, lifters, rock arm, followers, intake and exhaust valves, timing gears and chain. The oil then travels back into the oil pan creating a recirculation system. The oil pump determines the amount of oil pressure the engine will have via a pressure spring fitted into a relief valve of the pump. A camshaft is situated in the cylinder block or cylinder head which has oblong lobes or cams which causes a tappet or lifter to open and close the intake and exhaust valves. This force is applied on the valve directly or through an intermediate mechanism such as a rocker arm, lifter, follower or tappet. Push rods are used to connect the camshaft to the rocker arm via the lifter. Each valve utilizes a spring which returns the valve to their original position (closed.)
