How to Check and Replace Transfer Case Fluid

This guide requires the following supplies:

• Transmission Fluid Pump

Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

Secure the vehicle on a level surface.

Locate the oil fill plug on the transfer case.

Remove the top oil fill plug.

Using a flashlight, check for oil at the fill plug hole. When full, the oil should be just below the top hole.

With the top oil fill plug still out, remove the bottom oil drain plug to drain the oil into an oil drain pan.

Inspect transfer case oil for metal flakes when in the oil drain pan.

Thread the oil drain plug back into the transfer case (lower plug hole) and torque to manufacturer's specifications.

Fill the transfer case with the manufacturer's recommended oil until it begins to flow from the fill plug hole.

Thread the oil fill plug back into the transfer case.

Torque the oil fill plug to 30 ft. lbs.

Check for transfer case leaks.
