How To Check Differential Gear Oil Fluid

Differential Gear Oil Fluid Check

Helpful Information:
When after checking a differential fluid level, inspect the unit for leaks such as a rear axle seal. Always maintenance a differential and service the gear oil on a regular basis to ensure continuous operation. Knowing how a differential works also aids in troubleshooting noise related problems.
Best Practices
  • Use quality gear lubricants
  • Use manufacturer recommended fluid and additives
  • Inspect the differential for leaks shortly after adding gear oil

Step by step instructions on how to check and add gear oil to an automotive differential. This article pertains to all rear wheel vehicles.
Difficulty Scale: 2 of 10
Tools and Supplies needed
  • Flashlight
  • Appropriate 3/8 ratchet, socket or wrench
