Control Arms & Links
Removal & Installation
Lower Control Arm
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the tire and wheel.NOTEHold the link with a wrench during nut removal.
- Remove the stabilizer link to lower control arm nut.
- Remove the trailing arm bracket to underbody bolts, 2005-06 models only.
- Place a screw type jackstand under the lower control arm.
- Using the jackstand, compress the coil spring.
- Remove the lower shock bolt.
- Remove the jounce bumper nut at the lower control arm, 2005-06 models only.
- Loosen the lower control arm to support the frame bolt.
- Remove the lower control arm to knuckle nut and bolt.
- Lower the control arm in order to unload the coil spring.
- Remove the coil spring.
- Remove the jounce bumper.
- Remove the control arm support nut and bolt.
- Remove the lower control arm.
To install:
- Position the lower control to the support and hand tighten the bolt and nut.
- Install the spring and jounce bumper to the lower control arm; then hand tighten the jounce bumper nut.NOTESpray silicon lubricant on the insulators to aid in installation. Ensure the spring is properly seated.
- Position the spring with the rubber insulators into the vehicle.
- Use a screw type jack stand to compress the spring.
- Install the knuckle to the lower control arm. Tighten the lower control arm to knuckle nut and bolt to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the lower control arm to support nut and bolt. Tighten the nut and bolt as follows:
- Install the shock to the lower control arm. Tighten the lower shock bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Remove the jackstand.
- Tighten the jounce bumper to the lower control arm nut, 2005-06 models only. Tighten the nut to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
- Install the stabilizer link to the lower control arm. Tighten the nut to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).NOTEHold the link with a wrench during nut installation.
- Push the trailing arm upward to align the front bracket to the body bolt, 2005-06 models only.
- Use a drift to aid in bracket alignment and install the remaining bolts. Tighten the bracket to body bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Install the tire and wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check the rear alignment.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the trailing arm bracket to body bolts, 2005-06 models only.
- If applicable, remove the antilock brake system (ABS) brake harness from the upper control arm.
- Remove the upper control arm to knuckle nut and bolt.
- Remove the upper control to support nut and bolt.
- Remove the upper control arm.
To install
- Install the upper control arm to the knuckle.
- Loosely install the upper control arm to knuckle nut and bolt.
- Install the upper control to support bolt and cam nut.
- Tighten the upper control arm to knuckle nut and bolt. Tighten the nut and bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Tighten the upper control arm to support bolt. Tighten the upper control arm to support bolt as follows:
- If applicable, install the ABS harness to the upper control arm.
- Push upward on the trailing arm and loosely install the front bolt, 2005-06 models only.
- Use a drift to align the remaining bolts. Tighten the trailing arm bracket to body bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check the rear alignment.
Removal & Installation
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the tire and wheel.NOTEHold the link with a wrench during nut removal.
- Remove the stabilizer link to lower control arm nut.
- Remove the trailing arm bracket to underbody bolts.
- Place a screw-type jackstand under the lower control arm.
- Using the jackstand, compress the coil spring.
- Remove the lower shock bolt.
- Loosen the lower control arm to support frame bolt.
- Remove the lower control arm to knuckle nut and bolt.
- Slowly lower the control arm in order to unload the coil spring.
- Remove the coil spring.
To install:
- Fully seat the top and bottom coil spring insulators to the spring.NOTESpray silicon lubricant on the insulators to aid in installation. Ensure that part number identification tape located on the coil spring is oriented outboard of the vehicle and at the top of the spring.
- Position the spring with the rubber insulators into the vehicle.
- Use a screw-type jackstand to compress the spring.
- Install the knuckle to the lower control arm. Tighten the lower control arm to knuckle bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Tighten the lower control arm to support nut and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Install the shock to the lower control arm. Tighten the lower shock bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Remove the jackstand.NOTEHold the link with a wrench during nut installation.
- Install the stabilizer link to the lower control arm. Tighten the nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
- Push the trailing arm upward to align the front bracket to body bolt.
- Use a drift to aid in bracket alignment and install the remaining bolts. Tighten the bracket to body bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Install the tire and wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check the rear alignment.
Knuckle
Removal & Installation
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the tire and wheel.
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
- Remove the upper control arm to knuckle bolt and nut.
- Remove the lower control arm to knuckle bolt and nut.
- Remove the toe link to knuckle bolt and nut.
- Remove the trailing blade to knuckle bolts.
- Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
To install:
- Install the knuckle to the lower control arm. Loosely install the bolt and nut.
- Install the knuckle to the upper control arm. Loosely install the bolt and nut.
- Install the knuckle to the toe link. Loosely install the bolt and nut.
- Install the knuckle to trailing blade. Loosely install the bolt and nut.
- Tighten the bolts and nuts in the following sequence:
- Tighten the knuckle to lower control arm bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Tighten the knuckle to upper control arm bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Tighten the knuckle to toe link bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Tighten the knuckle to trailing blade bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Install the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
- Install the tire and wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Perform a vehicle wheel alignment.
Shock Absorbers
Removal & Installation
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the lower shock bolt.
- If equipped, remove the splash shield.
- Remove the upper shock bolt.
- Remove the shock from the vehicle.
To install:
- Install the shock to the vehicle.
- Install the upper shock bolt. Tighten the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- For right side only, install splash shield
- Install the lower shock bolt. Tighten the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links
Removal & Installation
- Raise and support the vehicle.NOTEHold the ball shaft secure with a TORX® bit, when removing the nut.
- Remove the stabilizer link to stabilizer bar nut.
- Remove the stabilizer bar clamp bolts.
- Disengage the stabilizer bar from the stabilizer link ball studs, while removing the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
To install
- Position the stabilizer in the vehicle, while positioning the links to the stabilizer bar.
- Install the stabilizer bar clamp bolts. Tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).NOTEHold the ball shaft secure with a TORX® bit, when installing the nut.
- Install the stabilizer link to stabilizer bar nut. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Loosen the stabilizer bar clamp bolts.NOTEHold the ball shaft secure with a TORX® bit, when removing the nut.
- Remove the stabilizer link to stabilizer bar nut.NOTEWhen disconnecting the stabilizer link, hold the link with a wrench to prevent turning.
- Remove the stabilizer link to control arm nut.
- Remove the stabilizer link from the vehicle.
To install:
- Position the stabilizer link through the control arm.NOTEWhen connecting the stabilizer link, hold the link with a wrench to prevent turning.
- Install the stabilizer link to control arm nut. Tighten the nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).NOTEHold the ball shaft secure with a TORX® bit, when installing the nut.
- Install the stabilizer link to stabilizer bar nut. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Install the stabilizer bar clamp bolts. Tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
Toe Link
Removal & Installation
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the toe link to knuckle nut and bolt.
- Remove the toe link to support nut and bolt.
- Remove the toe link from the vehicle.
To install:
- Install the toe link to the support assembly.NOTEInstall the bolt with the head towards the front of the vehicle. Position the cam nut in same position as in the upper control arm.
- Install the toe link to support nut and bolt.
- Install the toe link to the knuckle. Tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Tighten the toe link to support bolt. Tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check the rear alignment.
Trailing Arm
Removal & Installation
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the trailing arm bracket to body bolts.
- Remove the trailing arm bushing to bracket nut and bolt.
- Remove the park brake cable clip from the trailing arm.
- Remove the trailing arm to knuckle bolts.
- Remove the trailing arm.
To install:
- Install the trailing arm to the knuckle. Tighten the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Position the trailing arm bracket to the trailing arm.
- Loosely install the trailing arm bushing to bracket nut and bolt.
- Push upward on the trailing arm and loosely install the front bolt.
- Use a drift to align the remaining bolts. Tighten the trailing arm bracket to body bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Tighten the trailing arm bushing to bracket nut and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
- Install the park brake cable clip. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Lower the vehicle.
Wheel Bearings
Adjustment
The wheel bearings are not adjustable and must be replaced if necessary.
Removal & Installation
- Remove the rear brake drum, 2005-06 models.
- Remove the rear brake rotor, 2007 models.
- On vehicles with all-wheel drive, remove the halfshaft spindle nut.
- Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector, if equipped.NOTEDo not damage the halfshaft joint seal.
- Support the halfshaft with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent.
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub mounting bolts.
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly from the suspension knuckle.
To install:
- Install the wheel bearing/hub assembly to the steering knuckle.
- Install the wheel bearing/hub mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts as follows:
- On all-wheel drive vehicles, install the halfshaft spindle nut. Tighten the nut to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
- If equipped, route the wheel speed sensor electrical harness through the backing plate and seat the grommet.
- Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
- Install the rear brake drum or brake rotor.
