Ford Pick-ups and Broncos 1987-1996 Batter Replacement

Ford F-350 Battery Replacement

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Loosen the nuts which secure the cable ends to the battery terminals. Lift the negative battery cables from the terminals first with a twisting motion, then the positive cables. If there is a battery cable puller available, make use of it.

WARNING
On vehicles with dual batteries, take great care to avoid ground the disconnected end of the positive cable linking the two batteries, before the other end is disconnected.

  1. Remove the hold-down nuts from the battery hold-down bracket and remove the bracket and the battery. Lift the battery straight up and out of the vehicle, being sure to keep the battery level to avoid spilling the battery acid.
  2. Before installing the battery in the vehicle, make sure that the battery terminals are clean and free from corrosion. Use a battery terminal cleaner on the terminals and on the inside of the battery cable ends. If a cleaner is not available, use coarse grade sandpaper to remove the corrosion. A mixture of baking soda and water poured over the terminals and cable ends will help remove and neutralize any acid buildup.

WARNING
Take great care to avoid getting any of the baking soda solution inside the battery. If any solution gets inside the battery a violent reaction will take place and/or the battery will be damaged.

  1. Before installing the cables onto the terminals, cut a piece of felt cloth, or something similar into a circle about 3 in. (76mm) across. Cut a hole in the middle about the size of the battery terminals at their base. Push the cloth pieces over the terminals so that they lay flat on the top of the battery. Soak the pieces of cloth with oil. This will keep oxidation to a minimum.
  2. Place the battery in the vehicle. Install the cables onto the terminals.

WARNING
On vehicles with dual batteries, take great care to avoid grounding the disconnected end of the positive cable linking the two batteries, after the other end is connected.

  1. Tighten the nuts on the cable ends.
See Routine Maintenance for battery maintenance illustrations.
  1. Smear a light coating of grease on the cable ends and tops of the terminals. This will further prevent the buildup of oxidation on the terminals and the cable ends.
  2. Install and tighten the nuts of the battery hold-down bracket.
