How to Adjust a Headlight

Headlight Adjustment

Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

1
Face the front of your vehicle 25 feet away from a wall. Make sure the ground is level and the vehicle is perpendicular to the wall.
2
Measure from the ground to the center of the headlight lenses. Measure the distance between the two headlight lenses.
3
Place a horizontal strip of masking tape on the wall four inches lower than the headlight lenses. Place the tape directly in front of the vehicle and mark the centerline.
4
Turn the headlights on (low beams).
5
Turn the vertical adjustment screw until the top of the headlight beam is aligned with the tape on the wall.

6
Turn the horizontal adjustment screw until the headlight beam is straight ahead. To ensure proper horizontal adjustment, the measurement between the headlight lenses and the beams on the wall should be equal.
