How to Replace an A/C Compressor

A/C Compressor Replacement


Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

Open the hood and locate your vehicle's A/C compressor.

Remove the A/C belt from the A/C compressor pulley. May involve loosening the belt tensioner (if equipped).

Evacuate the A/C system using a refrigerant recovery machine.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the bolt that secures refrigerant lines to the A/C compressor. Inspect A/C lines for any contamination such as metal or excessive dirt inside of them. If you find any contamination the system will need to be cleaned.

Disconnect any electrical connectors from the A/C compressor.

Remove the AC connections. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts. Remove the A/C compressor from the vehicle.

Install the new A/C compressor. Often the A/C compressor installation and warranty will require changing these components; the orifice tube and the receiver - dryer at a minimum.

Install and tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts.

Reconnect any electrical connectors to the A/C compressor.

Replace O-rings and lubricate the O-rings with oil. Re-install the refrigerant lines and A/C belt to the A/C compressor.

Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Evacuate air in the A/C system with an A/C servicing machine.

Pull a vacuum on the system to check for leaks.

If system holds the vacuum, charge the system with A/C servicing machine.

Check the A/C system sticker (underhood) for the proper amount and type of refrigerent and oil in the system. (If you have replaced a major component in the system don't forget to replace the amount of oil that was in the component)

Insert a Thermometer into the center A/C register

Turn on the A/C system with the engine running and check to see if cold air is now coming out of the air duct.

If the A/C system is functioning properly the thermometer should read between 30 and 36 degrees F and you may find that your electric radiator fan and compressor clutch will be cycling off and on depending on the outside air temperature.
