Brake Shoes Replacement
Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

Secure your vehicle on a level surface, making sure your car will not roll or lean when jacked up. Chock the wheels not being removed.

Break the lug nuts loose but do not remove. Lift up your vehicle using a floor jack.

Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.

Remove the lug nuts. Remove the wheels.

Remove the brake drum. If necessary, back off the star wheel adjuster.

Clean the brake assembly using a Wet Wipe Method. This method uses a spray bottle with water and detergent. Or use spray brake cleaner. Be sure to capture the overspray and run-off into an oil drain pan or suitable container. Do not use compressed air to clean the brakes. Inspect the brake shoes for wear or damage.

Remove the primary (front) and secondary (rear) brake shoe return springs from the anchor pin and brake shoes.

Remove the adjuster cable and spring assembly. Remove the star adjusting screw and thread the adjuster all the way in.

Remove the primary (front) brake shoe retainer. Remove the front brake shoe and parking brake link.

Remove the parking brake lever from the secondary (rear) brake shoe. Remove the rear brake shoe retainer and remove the rear brake shoe.

Apply white lithium grease to the backing plate contact points.

Install the new brake shoes in the reverse order of removal. Be sure to install the primary (front) brake shoe in the correct position. Be careful to keep the new brake shoes clean. Use the spray brake cleaner to remove all residual grease and dirt from the brake friction material.

Inspect the brake drum condition and measure the inside diameter. Resurface if necessary or replace if worn oversize - beyond maximum limits. Install the brake drum and adjust the brake shoes using the adjuster until you feel / hear / discern a slight drag or contact is achieved as the drum is rotated.

Install the wheels. Torque lug nuts to manufacturer's specifications in a star (criss-cross) pattern.

Lower vehicle and test drive to verify repairs.
