How to Replace a Ball Joint

Ball Joint Replacement


Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

Secure the vehicle on a level surface, making sure the vehicle will not roll or lean when jacked up. Break the front wheel lug nuts loose but do not remove.

Using a floor jack, lift up the front of the vehicle.

Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. The pinch welds and the frame are the two best locations. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.

Remove the front wheels by removing the lugs nuts that are holding them on.

Support the lower control arm with a floor jack close to the ball joint. Remove the cotter pin from the ball joint retaining nut.

Loosen the nut by turning it a few times.

Separate the ball joint from the knuckle by using a ball joint separator. Remove the nut and secure the knuckle out of the way.

Using a special tool, press the bad ball joint out of the upper or lower control arm.

Press the new ball joint into the control arm.

Install the steering knuckle back on the control arm/ball joint assembly.

Torque the castle nut to manufacturer's specifications.

Install a new cotter pin.

Reinstall the vehicle's wheels.

Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications.
