Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

Park your vehicle on a solid, level surface and set the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool before working under the hood.

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the distributor mounted on the top of the engine connected to the spark plug wires.

Remove the distributor cap and set it aside with the plug wires still attached.

Disconnect the wiring harness and the vacuum advance hose if applicable.

Mark the location of the distributor and rotor on the engine block. Remove the distributor mounting bolt and clamp. Pull the distributor out of the engine block.



Tip: Do not rotate the engine with the distributor removed.

Transfer the rotor and alignment marks to the new distributor.

Align the rotor and distributor with the marks on the engine block and install the new distributor. Install the retaining clamp and bolt, but do not tighten.

Install the distributor cap and reconnect the wiring harness and the vacuum advance hose if applicable.

Attach a timing light to the number 1 cylinder's spark plug wire.

Locate the timing marks on the engine block and the harmonic balancer. Apply chalk to the mark on the harmonic balancer if it is hard to see.

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the vehicle's engine.

Point the timing light at the marks and rotate the distributor to set the timing to the manufacturer's specification.

After the timing has been set, tighten the clamp bolt.

Road test your vehicle to verify the repair.
